Some people believe that workers feel better when they do similar tasks all day long because it is simple and easy. However, in my opinion, workers are more satisfied when they have many different types of tasks to do during the workday. This is because different types of working prevent workers to make mistakes and they work more creative.
To start with, when people do one thing for a long time, they get bored. Human beings are not machine so they get stressed. This make workers do mistakes because they do not pay attention to their work. In contrast, when people do various thing, they focus on what they do. While they do unfamiliar works or activities, they pay more attention about those and do the best to finish it perfectly. My wife has worked a as coffee maker since several months ago at the cafe. At first, employer thought she was not an expert so directed her to do only one thing. She only made a espresso for three months. She believed she mastered to make a espresso but she made a lot of mistakes last months. She thought making a espresso was so easy so she didn't pay attention when she made it. Now, she got a charge of all kinds of coffee. She said she doesn't make mistakes because she always get nervous.
On top of that, working various types of works helps people to be creative. When people try to start new types of tasks, they think how to do it and what is the best way to do that. This make people be more energetic. In contrast, on only one kind of stuff like machine is regarded as a routine such as a brushing teeth. So people who do only one thing do not think neither how to do it or what is the best way. My wife is a good example again. When she just made a espresso, there was no any creativity. Now, she always think how to make the coffee when customers order. Eventually, she figured which flavor is customers' favorite and she made the most of it and she made a new coffee. This is now a signature menu in the cafe.
To sum up, doing one type of task is boring and not be creative. On the contrary, when people do many different types of tasks to do, they pay more attention to do it and be more creative. For these reasons, I believe that workers are more satisfied when they do various tasks during the workday. |
