Q. When a country faces an economic crisis, Which of the following do you think the government should spend less money on? -Schools -Public libraries -Public transit -Military
Undoubtedly, economic crisis gives a significant effect in people's daily lives. Under such circumstances, government should put priority on certain part of social services. Some people may suggest that government decrease the budget for school service, while others do not. Each contention may have their own reasons to support their views. If I were asked to choose one, I would say that government should spend less money on military. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, expending a lot of money on military can lead to citizens' complaints. Improving military service is a type of welfare that citizens can utilize the least. If citizens start to think that the money is spent on less important matters especially far from their lives, they are likely to lose trust in the government. For example in 2008, severe economic crisis hit all over the world. In Korea, the government spent money on other subjects such as public libraries or transit at first. However, when the regime changed, the new one diverted its policy from its predecessor, spending more money on military. As soon as people found out that the government was putting impose on army force, surveys at that time evidently implied that the citizens' believe toward the regime were reducing.
I strongly believe that the advantages of decreasing budget for military far outweigh those of decreasing budget for others for the reasons I have mentioned above. The government must prioritize issues and use its budget more efficiently and wisely.
