In the reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that there are a lot of problems in online encyclopedias. However, in the lecture, the professor gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First and foremost, the professor contends that it is unlikely that there is an error in online encyclopedias. To be specific, it is almost impossible to make encyclopedias without any mistakes and errors. In addition, if there is an error or inaccurate information in printed encyclopedias, it will remain for decades. However, online encyclopedias can be edited easily if there is an error. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that online encyclopedia can include a lot of errors because people who are not experts write them.
Next, the professor insists that hackings can be prevented in some ways. To explain, there is a special format for articles which do not allow online users to change the content, which makes articles in online encyclopedias reliable. Moreover, there are special editors who can eliminate any changes in articles. This counters the reading passage’s assertion that hackers can change the original articles and it is hard to detect.
Finally, the professor argues that online encyclopedias can deal with a large amount of information. In traditional encyclopedias, there is a limited space so people should decide if a topic is important or not. In order to do this, experts make decisions which do not reflect people’s interests at all. On the other hand, space is not an issue for the communal encyclopedias. There are a wide variety of academic articles and topics reflecting (동사는 are 이기 대문에 reflect를 동사로 쓰는 것이 아니라 분사 구문으로 씁니다) great diversity of users’ interests. This refutes the reading passage’s suggestion that online encyclopedias focus on popular topics and it can make people have a false impression. (on what? 더 자세한 설명 해주세요)
