The
writer of the reading passage and the lecturer talk about Whales' beaching
behavior. The writer suggests three theories to
explain the behavior while the lecturer raises specific counterclaims and
points out why the three theories are not true.
To
begin with, the lecturer argues that illness is not the main
factor of whales' beaching, stating that most of
whales found in beach are free of lines of infection. This
is in complete opposition to the reading passage, insisting that
beaching behavior is caused by illness, because sick whales infected
by microbes and disoriented swim too close to the shore, they may become trapped
when the tide goes out.
Furthermore,
the second assertion of the reading passage, that when earthquakes occur, whale
can
confuse or panic them into going towards land
because of the electromagnetic field
waves is refuted by the lecturer. The lecturer explains that thousands
of earthquakes break every year, and only a few beaching follow the
earthquakes.
Finally,
regarding the last point about the sonar equipment, the writer states that
invention of sonar made mass beaching more common. The lecturer, however,
contends that sonar does not have an influence
on every spices of whale, one
spice is uniquely vulnerable to earthquake, but the majority of whales are
not affected by earthquakes.
