In the reading passage, there is ample support for the author's claim that the government should not spend on the arts. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal the author's point.
First, the professor contends that the government should affords the arts. Even if spending on the education and other activities related to the society are necessary, the arts have an important role in the society in terms that it can be helpful to relieve stress. For example, according to the survey, a bunch of people were satisfied with the government investment on national museum. In other words, the governments' funding for the arts increased life satisfaction. This casts doubt on the reading passage's claim that the government should not spend their tax dollars on providing an entertainment.
Next, the professor argues that it is unlikely that political influence have a negative effect on the development of the art. There is a NEA, which hire experts to determine for which kind of arts should be fundded. Thus, it would not affect the development of the art. This refutes the reading passage's suggestion that the governments' funding could prevent the art from developing.
Finally, the professor insists that it is not true that the arts will be fostered by market forces naturally. This is due to the fact that companies would not receive any economic incentives by funding for the art. For example, unlike the funding for the non-profit art program for the children which lacked, commercial arts received lots funding from the company. This counters the reading passage's assertion that natural economic forces would contribute to the development of the art. |
