Some people might think that living in an area for a long time is helpful to maintain good relationships with old friends like saying that “out of sight, out of mind”. In my opinion, however, there is no connection between moving to a new town and relationships with old friends. There are two reasons why I think this way. First of all, people today can use various systems to keep in touch with their friends although they are living far away from them. Also, we can use the transportation systems to meet friends.
First of all, we can use developed technology to see our old friends anywhere and anytime without any limitations. Nowadays, people tend to move to a new city very often in order to get more job opportunities or find better educational environments for their children. However, few people are worried about keeping good relationships with their old friends because they can continuously contact with them through the internet and SNS service with their computers or smartphones. I want to give an example to explain this. I had to move a lot in my childhood years since my father worked as an army for 20 years. From elementary school to high school, I had moved to three countries and eight cities. My father gave me a very good laptop with which I could contact my friends and share many experiences and information. Now that I think about it, these experiences helped me to sustain good relationships with my old friends.
On top of that, we can use various types of transportations and vehicles to meet friends living in other cities. In other words, we can visit them by train, bus, or aircraft, and also travel to other places they want to go like Hawaii or Gaum. Actually, the main reason people do not have deep relationships with others is not a distance, money or time but a lack of a sense of intimacy. There are a lot of ways to meet their friends even if they live in cities far from here. For example, I can visit my friends in Korea every year and we ofter traveled abroad together. These experiences allowed us to build closer relationships.
To sum up, we can use the internet or various transportation systems to sustain good relationships with old friends. In this regard, I disagree with the statement that moving a new city has a negative effect on our intimacy with others. |
