Undoubtedly, the relationship
between children and parents plays an important role in people’s lives in many
of the places where they work or play. Some people think that parents fifty
years ago did not understand their children as much as they do today, while
others do not. Both sides may have their own reasons to support their views. If
I asked to choose one, I would say that parents are able to understand their
children easier these days comparing to they did in the past. There are several
reasons and examples as follows.
Most of all, recently,
parents can understand their kids better because they have more chances to broaden
their horizons. Machines nowadays are equipped with many functions that help them
get information easily. When such functions are well-used, it exposes them to
different cultures, customs, and lifestyles more often. Such exposure is likely
to enable them to understand the diversity, to acknowledge that different
values exist, and to ultimately be comfortable with it. For instance, when my
youngest brother was an elementary student, one of his friends came from
Ethiopia. Our parents felt awkward about her because they thought that her eating
habit; having meals with her bare hands caused illness. They forced him not to
be friends with her but he did not listen to them which often led to small
fights. However, our parents have changed since they learned about the Africans’
eating habit from the Internet. They realized that their eating styles actually
helped people digest well without being diagnosed with serious diseases and
they actually had a lot in common in a way that they all cared about their families
and friends and were committed to relationships. They were able to understand
my brother, made apologize to him and his friend, and stopped fighting with that
matter. On the other hand, his grandparents blocked their parents from being a friend
with African classmates when they were young for the same prejudice as our
parents had. Since technologies were not advanced like the present and thus, it
was not possible to convey information regardless of time and distance.
Therefore, our parents were not able to mingle with them even though they
wanted.
In brief, I strongly
believe that it becomes easier for parents to get to know their children as
they did in the past for the reasons I have mentioned above. All in all, this
trend will be continued as the technology will keep developing by making people
get knowledge more at ease. |
