There has been an argument regarding the issue that students' test
scores should be reflected in teachers' pay. Some people insist that teachers'
main target is teaching and it is natural policy. However, in my opinion, the
performance of students does not directly reflect teachers' lecture quality,
and teachers have various roles in the school in addition to teaching.
To begin with, a good teaching
method is not directly connected to good students' grades. To get higher grades
in the test, students should study themselves. It is out of the teacher's
ability and up to the students. When I
was in middle school, my math teacher had a passion to teach students and his
teaching skill was actually much better than the normal mathematics teachers.
Thanks to his superior lecture, my math grade increased significantly. However,
in our class, there were some students who gave up studying math. Even if the teacher tried to cheer up those students to study math, they never studied
math. Therefore, giving salary proportion to students' performance is unfair.
On top of that, the object of
teachers is not only students' grades but also dealing with students. School is
a small society rather than an institution for teaching. Students can learn how
to have a good relationship with their classmates and prepare their adulthoods.
In this society, the teachers act as guides. They are much older than students
and have a lot of wisdom which helps to live human society. Therefore, teachers
intervene in students' behavior and revise it. They always tell students such
as "to be polite, do not tell a lie, say thank you if you got
assistance". These are important roles of teachers, however, it cannot be
assessed by the performance score of students.
In a nutshell, regarding the
salary of teachers should proportion to students' test scores, some people
insist that giving incentives depending on the performance of students is a
good motivation for the teacher. However, in my opinion, teaching skill is not
directly correlated to students' score and the purposes of teachers are not
only increasing students' performance.
For these reasons, I strongly believe teachers' earnings should not be
based on their students' performance. |
