Many people think it is better for universities to spend
more money on libraries than sports. However, in my opinion, the merits of
sports on students outweigh those of libraries. That is because they help
students improve academic performance and make friends easier. To begin with, doing exercises makes cinergy effect with
studying. Suppose that a student studies all the time without exercising at
all. Is he likely to get the good score in the exam? I doubt it. The reason is
that studying steadily for a long period requires stamina and the ability to
focus on the task. For example, there was one study conducted by the Department
of the Education to determine the impact of the exercise on the academic
performance. One group of students did work out while studying and were asked
to take tests to estimate their learning ability before and after the research.
The other group of students studied without any kind of exercise and were
requested the same thing. The result was the former had remarkable increase in
their scores. The main reason was that working out regularly activates the part
of the brain associated with the memory and the learning ability, which affects
the effectiveness of the studying. While at first it might sound ridiculous
that one should exercise to study effectively and better, it turned out that
exercises have a positive effect on the academic performance. Thus, the
university should spend more budget on sports than libraries. Second, freshmen can make
friends without much effort by playing sports together. Most of the sports are
team sports, so they require team work. Exercising is the perfect way to make a
lot of friends without striving to meet new people. For example, when I first
entered the university, I did not know anyone and unfortunately not an
extrovert. One day, I was suggested to join a basketball club by my professor.
I cannot deny that it was awkward for me to spend lots of time exercising
together every day with strangers. Nonetheless, as time went by, I could make a
lot of friends there. The best way for introverts like me to make friends
easily is to join sports club. Therefore, with university supporting sports, it
could help lots of students adapt to the university quickly. To sum up, exercising can improve academic achievement
and make it easier for freshmen to go well with their colleagues. Therefore, I
argue that universities can get better result when spending more money on
sports than libraries.
