교실에 꼭 살려둬야할 진화론
[2-1]
The Korean science education is unfortunately unable to teach students the universal language of science. Outdated school textbooks and wrong teaching methods are blocking the nation's future leaders from entering the world of science.
The Evolution Theory serves as the perfect example of how science education is totally off-road in Korea. The famous theory that long ago gained world recognition because of its significant implications about biodiversity is not mentioned in school textbooks. To make matters worse, teachers simply command students to repeatedly read out loud useless materials in class.
The most disappointing part is the reason that Korean students today do not know anything about scientific theories that are constantly discussed worldwide. Adults including important decision makers are busy making ridiculous political and religious arguments that block students from learning essential studies. Selfish and irresponsible adults are completely blinding Korea's future leaders.
To make a long story short, science education is wrong from the start. Textbooks need to contain the theories and concepts that the world has been highlighting for decades. Even at this very moment, students are putting effort to memorize meaningless words both at school and at home.
2014학년도 입학시험문제 (전공영어)
※ Question 1-1, 1-2는 실제 시험에서 공백의 답안지에 문제를 듣고 답을 기술하는 시험입니다.
Directions: This text is about the sense of smell. There is some specialized terminology used in the text. They are ① anosmia ② limbic system ③ olfaction ④ olfactory membrane. The words are written on the test sheet. You may take notes as you are listening to the text. Answer the following two questions after listening to the text.
Question 1-1: Summarize the following text. There are sixteen lines in the answer sheet. Be sure to stay within the sixteen lines.
Question 1-2: Describe a personal experience in which a particular smell evoked past memories.
[1-1]
We all enjoy the pleasant smell of fresh milk, coffee and flowers. We also have smells that we love and remember. This is because the brain is specifically designed to link memories with smell.
Once someone smells something, the smell goes directly to the brain. The brain instantly takes a snapshot of the particular experience and attaches it with the associated smell. Then the brain puts the smell-related memory into a special room. This is why we have smells that we like and smells that we dislike. The sense of smell also helps us taste food since the sense of taste alone cannot catch the smell of your next freshly brewed coffee.
Without the sense of smell, a person can get knocked into a different life. People who lost their sense of smell can be unable to share their thoughts or happy memories with others since their special room of smell-related memories in the brain is empty. They can even suffer from depression later on. Unfortunately, the cause for such illness is unclear. Brain damage and failure of the immune system are only some of the many causes of losing the sense of smell.
Life will definitely be far beyond miserable without the sense of smell. It helps us appreciate the small things in life and triggers happy thoughts.
