TOEFL: 257 (Writing: 5.0)
Work career: 병원 연구소 3년 (associate researcher)
Presentation:

On behalf of the MCB Admissions Committee, I am delighted to inform you that you have been chosen from among several hundred applicants for admission to the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) as a candidate for the Ph.D. degree. You have been chosen for this distinction based on your impressive academic achievements, your research experience, and the strong letters of support from those with whom you have worked.
As part of our offer, we are pleased to award you a 12-month stipend of $18,000 beginning in September 2002 which brings with it medical insurance benefits, a waiver of all tuition and the Graduate School’s curriculum fee. During your first year you will participate in our rotation program through which you will choose a permanent academic home from among the many research labs in our Program. After the first year, our policy is to provide continuing financial support, usually in the form of a research assistantship, for all MCB doctoral students in good standing.
An important part of your activities in your first academic year will be a teaching assistantship (TA) which will satisfy MCB’s teaching requirement. Your TA assignment will be a class in Biology or Biochemistry; both departments require that their TAs have an adequate mastery of spoken English and are prepared to provide instruction in English to American undergraduates. Our Graduate School also requires that all foreign TAs take a test of spoken English (TSE) before starting their TA assignments, and offers free classes that are very helpful in improving spoken English proficiency. If your TSE score is low the MCB program will require you to attend these classes. If, when you arrive, we find that your spoken English is inadequate for your TA assignment, the MCB Program may require that you repeat your TA assignment in your second year.
The University Graduate School will also be sending you a formal acceptance letter but they will not do so until they have received official copies of your GRE and TOEFL scores. If you have not already done so, please arrange for these scores to be sent to the Graduate School as soon as possible. This is doubly important because the University cannot send you the I-20 form until the Graduate School has received these official documents. After you make a decision about whether you will join us, please notify us directly in addition to returning the card sent by the Graduate School. Please note also that you need to accept our offer in writing before the I-20 can be sent to you. If you wish to reply by FAX our number is 1-413-545-1812. Finally, because there are so many highly qualified candidates for a very few positions we can only guarantee to hold your place until April 15, 2002. At this time if you have not formally accepted our invitation we must withdraw our offer.
If you take a look at our brochure and web site www.bio.umass.edu/mcb you can check out our faculty and their research interests. The information on our web site is current. If you have any questions about the MCB program, the University, or the Amherst area please contact Mary Bell in the MCB Office at (413) 545-3246 or at marybell@bio.umass.edu, or our Admissions Director, Danny Schnell, at dschnell@biochem.umass.edu. For particular questions about what life is like here in Amherst and the MCB Program from a student's perspective you could contact Sherri Svedine, a fourth year student in the MCB Program. Her email address is sv@vasci.umass.edu.
I very much hope that you will accept our invitation to join the MCB Program.

[02/15-12:08] | |
