Some people might say that understanding the past is useless in solving the current problems because things changed rapidly. In my opinion, however, we need to review the past to solve the problems of the present and future: we can find the causes of the problems and learn from others’ experiences in the past.
To begin with, understanding the past enables us to find the causes of the problems now and future. Generally, most current issues or problems are related with the past because of the continuity of time. Therefore, by reviewing the past, we are able to find the causes of the problems more exactly. For example, every semester, I studied very hard in Chinese class, trying to keep in mind all vocabulary in the text. However, my performances in Chinese class were always worse than other classmates. I checked my study plan and study quality, and then I found that while I studied vocabulary hard, I ignored speaking practice. Afterwards, I revised my study plan and spent more time in Chinese speaking. Finally, I got better score in the class. In this way, we can say that understating the past is beneficial to find the causes of the problems and get better.
Besides, we can learn from others’ experiences in the past. Generally, history always repeated itself, and similar situations or cases are easily found in the past history. Therefore we can get useful tips and information from the past in dealing with current problems. According the research conducted by the Korea Times, more than eighty percent of CEOs say that they analyze past experiences carefully when they face with problems or challenges. They also add that in past experiences or precedents provide them unexpected aspect of their problems, so they can look at the issues from different point of view and discover the solutions. Therefore, by understating the past, we can get useful advice.
In conclusion, I strongly think that in order to solve the problems of the present and future, we need to review the past in that we can find the causes of the problems and learn from others’ experiences in the past.
