There This is a debate (여기에 토론 topic 써주세요~) controversy on whether the writer’s points on why people sleep are correct or not. First, The writer explains why people need to sleep/ explicates the reasons why people need sleep, while In response, the lecturer goes against writer’s arguments by saying that the reasons made by writer argues that points made in the passage are inaccurate and inconclusive.
First of all, it is the lecturer’s opinion that it sleep has not been proven that to improve people’s memory functions could be improved while sleeping. She contends that even though there are experiments which support that sleeping can improve one’s ability to memorize, despite the presence of some experiments that might appear to suggest the validity of sleep helping one’s ability to memorize, there are is too much contradictory evidences to affirm so. She also mentions that REM sleep is not essential to gain gaining good memory after sleep. This counters the writer’s opinion that sleep does improve people’s memory functions, as it has been proven in experiments which test testing a relation between ability to memorize and sleeping hours (the dependence of memory on the amount of sleep one gets.)
Also, the lecturer asserts that sleep does not help to conserve energy(,) and, in fact, may perform exactly the opposite, as one cannot consume any food while sleeping. She goes on to say that the only conclusive fact is that sleep makes people use less energy than when they are awake. This is in contrast to the passage, in which the writer opines that an individual has more energy upon awaking from sleep. Lastly, the lecturer believes that sleep does not flush everyone’s body of harmful toxins, (몸 안에 있는 harmful toxins 라는 건가요?) adding that the amount of toxins absorbed differs from person to person. She also says that experiments relating to the theory are inconclusive(,) as participants were placed in extreme conditions that starkly differed from the normal pattern of sleeping. On the contrary, the writer is confident that the human body, especially the brain, gets is largely rid of harmful toxins in the duration of sleep(,) and that this helps one think more clearly.
