In the reading passage, the author asserts that recently emerged online
encyclopedias have several problems so they are less valuable than traditional
encyclopedias. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes the author’s idea by

Firstly, the
lecturer claims that online encyclopedias are not inferior in terms of
accuracy. Admittedly, quite many errors have been founded in online
encyclopedias so people might consider online encyclopedias are
inaccurate. However, what is important in matter of encyclopedias is how long the errors in encyclopedias remain. In
case of traditional ones, errors remain for more than a decade
because errors are printed on paper, so it is
not an easy work to find and correct those errors. In contrast, errors are
easily found and corrected in online encyclopedias.
Secondly, the
lecturer maintains that online encyclopedias already have strategies to protect
themselves from attacks that can corrupt information. They The creators of online encyclopedias devised a special format that protects basic, important
information so that protect these information from hackers. In addition,
online encyclopedias have hired full-time editors whose job is to correct inaccurate information.
Thirdly, the lecturer argues that online encyclopedias can actually provide
information that fit more to finder’s interests. Traditional encyclopedias have
limited space because understandingly they print information on paper. For this
reason, mostly appointed groups of people would
filter information and ideas that actually comprise an encyclopedia. In this
process, their own views unconsciously influence the entire composition of
encyclopedias. On the contrary, online encyclopedias have no limit of space
they can use so they are able to contain as much information as they want to
are needed to. In this reason, they can reflect
people’s diverse interests and topics that they want.
