From my young age, I had liked reading books. Once I got the free time, I usually used that as reading time. My dream was a writer or a lawyer, which are deeply related with communication. But when I entered high school, I became interested in medicine and change my mind. As a result, I majored pharmacy, but my interest for literature still exists. If I have a chance to study something I didn’t experience, I would choose literature –specifically English literature
First of all, I can attain deeper understanding for humans. As reading and analysis many books, I learn diverse views for life and events. People who I am able to meet are confined as those who live the same age with me and mostly live around me. But I can observe a various character in novels and try to understand their true heart in literary works. They have diverse backgrounds, personalities, and sense of values. Through that I can comprehend well about a human and a life than before.
Not only that, I can learn the history. Every novel reflects the age that it is written. Therefore, I can face a variety of events in novels that occurred in each era. My knowledge about American history is limited because I studied that only a history book, but novels interpret events as writer’s perspectives. The same events can translate and reflect in different ways according to character’s situations and backgrounds. Meeting with a lot of historical event and background is not only interesting but also making rich my historic knowledge.
On top up that, My English skill will improve. I can run into diverse expression in English during study and face the high level of English more frequently since reading English novel is a part of my job. Incessant exposure to English gives me developing a English skill.
To sum up, studying English literature provides me better understanding for human and life, history and language. It is a lot benefit for me since I am planning for living in the US. Therefore, If I can get a chance to study English literature, I will grab the chance. |
