Higher education should be only available to good students. |
Until the late 19th century, higher education was only available to the noble and extremely smart students. In contemeporary society, however, there's almost no limitation to enter colleges. In other words, even academically poor students can go to universities. Is it really better than before? Some people may say "yes", however, I believe that higher education should be only available to smart students. First reason is that only academically superior students can catch up with college curriculm. Plus, smart students encourage each other academically. To begin with, I strongly believe that higher education should be available exclusively to good students because academically poor students can not keep up with higher education. College education is based on what students learn in high school. It means that if a stuendent does not study hard in high school. he or she will have a great trouble in classes in the college. In this case, the stuendent may completely lose interest in studying. For instance, my older sister, Sandra, was not a good student in high school. Yet, she went to college because of my parents' pressure. In college, she did not focus on her studies as literally she could not understand academics terms in lectures. In the end, Sandy dropped school. Considering this example, in can be concluded that for academically poor students, going to universities is no good but a waste of time and money. Additionally, good students encourage each other academically. They tend to be more active in class discussions and more academically competitive. Such academically rich atmospehre leads good students to study harder. To take an example of my older brother,Jeffery, he recently transfered to Harvard. Before then, he enjoyed hanging out with his friends. Jeff, however, stays all day long in the school library thesedays. He told me that Harvardians' academic enthusiasm and competition motivates him to do his best. Hence, higher education should be exclusively offered to good students as it seems to be true that smarts students motivate each other to study harder. All in all, of course I partially admit many advantages of permitting academically inferior students to go to college. However, I firmly think that allowing them to have higher education will eventually lead them to have unfruitable time in college and deter smart students to academically prosper. |
