Both the reading passage and the lecture explain about the effects of sleep deprivation, especially children's lack of sleep. In the reading, lack of sleep can lead to poor grade and reaction in school and also increase in injury in school. However, in the listening, the professor points out that there might be other variables that affect those results.
According to the reading, children who had a enough sleep showed better academic performance compared to those who were lacking in sleep. In addition, the latter ones displayed poorer reaction times. Another research done by Italy also showed that if children do not sleep well, they are more likely to be susceptible to a certain injury on the playgroud.
However, the professor claims that although sleep is an important factor that contribute to acdemic performance and injury of children, there might be other variables that were ignored in judging the previous results. For one thing, poor academic performance may be the results of malnurishment, inappropriate clothing, and instable home environments. That is, it is way to much to say that the poor academic scores are only from the lack of sleep because it may be that the children did not have proper breakfast, not wearing clothes appropriately, and there may have been a fight between the kid's parents. It is not certain that how all the other variables have affected the test results in some way. Besides, when it comes to injury from the lack of sleep, it might also have other factors that lead to such results. The children might be too tired or too excited. As a result, these variables also contributed to the children's injury because children are fragile and easily affected other external surroundings.
In conclusion, the reading passage argues that sleep deprivation can cause poor academic performance and reaction time and injury of the children. However, the professor claims that the conclusion presented by the reading may be too hasty because there may be other variables in judging children's behaviors other than the sleep deprivation. |
