It is debatable whether universities should spend as much money on sports as they do on library. However, in my opinion I think spending money on sports is not that integral as spending money on library by the following two subsequent reasons.
To begin with, the main purpose of the universities is to foster students with knowledge. Most of the student enrolled the university to study more related to their interests. For example, the university that I firstly attended had a where I went for my freshmen year, there was poor library facility. School did not spend enough money to buy new books or references in library since our school was famous for the sports team. Thus, I was not able to get enough resources to do my assignment if I don’t unless I buy the books that I need. In my second year, I transferred to another university and they had a high tech library because the which school spent a lot of money to encourage students to be exposed on various trend books and resources. I was able to read a variety of subjects which were related to my fields and that helped me to write my papers well until I graduated. Also, the knowledge I piled through using this library greatly helped even helps me a lot while I am working now. From my experience, I think having a better quality of library in university is helpful for students for there future too.
On top of that, only few students use sports facilities in universities. Since not every students have has enough time to exercise nor like sports, it would be quite a waste of money if university put too much effort to make sports facilities better. For instance, there was a poll conducted by a Student Union in Korea University with 500 students in Seoul as respondent. The purpose of the survey was to understand consensus perspective about the benefits of use of sports facilities in their school. The result was intriguing. An overwhelming 80% had responded that because they do not have time to use it. This is because students have loads of works to do and there is not enough time to go for sports. The survey proved that only few students were interested in using the sports facilities. Therefore, even though the university put money on sports, they that would not give much extract benefits to students much from it.
To sum up, a the main goal of universities is for study and foster more knowledge and not much of students are interested in sports. In this regards, I think it is better to spend more money on libraries rather than on sports.
