▶ Your Answer :
A controversial issue whether giving grades
to students promotes learning or not has been ongoing. Several opinions arose,
and I support the idea that Providing students with grades does not promote
learning for two reason: students are stressed by grades, and giving grades
prevent students from learning other things that do not affect grades.
To start the argument, students are stressed
by grades and it may make students give up on hard subjects before they try to
understand of learning contents. In supporting my view, according to a recent
poll conducted at a renowned research center, 78 percent of education experts
claim that stress about grades adversely affects motivation to learn.
On top of that, Providing students with
grades prevents students from learning other things that do not affect grades.
Because many students place a priority on grades to enter a college, they tend
to learn only what will be on test. As a result, students may lose an
opportunity to learn a well-rounded education. For example, when I was in high
school, I only studied what would be on test like literature, math, and science
to get a good grade and did not participate ant group activity. In the end, I
could get a good grade on a test but I could not get real life lessons through
other diverse experience.
To sum up, giving grades cause stress and prevents
students from learning other things. In this regard, I maintain that it is bad
to award grades to students so that they are motivated to learn.
