Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Technology has made the world a better place. |
It is hard to deny that technology has polished our daily life by making various things easier to do. For instance, long-distance communication has become far easier to do since the invention of telephone, or we can go to any place in the world in a day as a result of the fact that we travel in air now. However, there is clear downfalls as lots of environment-related issues have come up to the surface. In the consideration of all these factors, I do not agree with the statement that technology has made the world a better place for several reasons. First, I do not think the world is a better place due to high-technology, because "convinience" don't always mean "better". Technology has helped the world be more convinient to live in, but it also became the cause of pollution that threats our survival. For example, it is widely accepted that global warming, which was caused various human activities, has become such a big issue that survival of mankind in near future is in question now. How can anyone call a place where inhabitants' life is on the line a good place? Second reason that the world did not get better from technology is because this technology made people more self-centered and isolated them from each other. In the past, there were many ocassions were people need face to face coorperation in order to get jobs done such as farming, hunting and so on. However, today, people connect to internet to get things done, and there is hardly anything that you cannot do on internet. As a result, the concept of community has been weaken and people tend to stay in their box. The warm feeling that could be obtained from skin to skin interaction has long gone. In conclusion, though it is certain that our life has become more comfortable as living the world do not require as much physical labor as it used to, technology did not certainly make the world a better place because of life-threatening pollution it resulted in, and weakening of man to man bond due to the advanceof internet technology. I think that we should look back and try to fix the problem before it gets too late. |
