I strongly insist that a censorship in some country should be abolished as soon as possible. Freedom of speech, the press and expression is a minimum of democracy. The existence of a censorship ruins people’s fundamental right to be happy. I can easily find the reason why the censorship is unimaginable in Republic of South Korea and North Korea.
First of all, censorship prohibits a basic ability of democracy. By censoring the press, it limits people’s thought about politic system. It enables a nation’s president to become a dictator, and to govern the nation effectively. People’s authority to criticize and to balance in democracy politic system cannot maintain for equalized society. For example, an army general Jeon of South Korea in 1980 ~ 1990 strongly had censored all the press, speech and even artist’s activities. Actually, he carried out a coup and ruled the nation as a member of armed forces. He had executed a martial law and restricted various kinds of democratic authorities for the purpose of economic development. Conscious journalists lost their job, and only politic advocators could survive. A concept of equality, complement, and retrain was vanished eventually at that time.
Second, freedom of expressing one’s thought is a fundamental human right. The constitution proclaim that human have right to behave, move, think, organize, express their thoughts and so on. Such authorities can provide people a real freedom. And such authorities can be real means of living. Back to the example I mentioned above, there were a lot of resistances nearly everyday in March 1980. Civilian, university students, and even high school students screamed on the street for their freedom. Dictator Jeon called them rebels and ordered suppression through military forces. Many people died, and buildings collapsed by fires of tank, but their deaths did not broadcast. Every media system was censored. People call the duration the darkest March. Any other country could not know a seriousness of South Korea’s politic situation.
Censorship can lead to a drastic result on democratic society, although it has some positive effect. I can imagine my life without freedom of speech, and thought. Restricting speech to someone is the same as sentencing a death penalty. |
