Which would you choose : a high-paying job with long hours that would give you little time with family or friends? or a lower-paying job with shorter hours that would give you more time with family and friends |
Values people praise highly upon are different from people to people. These different values tend to play very vital roles in the process of choosing a career. Even though money have become the most important factor in selecting a job, family and friends cannot be easily ignored. Personally, I would choose a lower-paying job that would give me more time with my friends because of several reasons that are closely related with values that I prefer. First reason that I would select a lower-paying job is because I can always count on family and friends, but I cannot count on money in the same way. Money come and go. I can have money onday, and nextday, I may not. However, my family and friends do not decide to leave me all of the sudden. You can always trust and they can become a stable supporters of yours. For example, when I lost my dad eight years ago, I got a lot of mental supports from family members and friends. They helped me go thru the rough time, but I do not think money would have done same job to me, meaning that even if I was a milionaire, I probably have gone thru as tough time as I did. Second reason I choose a job that provides me more time with friends is that there are things that can replace money, but there are not things that can replace family. People buy a job, fame and hornor with money, or these usually come along with money. However, we can never buy true friends and family with money. We can see a clear example of this in the novel "Great Gatsby". Gatsby is very wealthy, has all these luxurious things and throws great parties, but it is revealed, at the end, that he doesn't have a single friend who would come to his funeral. Even his thought-to-be a loved-one, Daisy, takes off with her husband. In conclusion, though it seems like money play ver significant role in our society and maybe even in our pursuit of happiness, it can never provide what family and family can provide. I will choose a lower-paying job that gives me more time to spend with a family for the facts that I can always count on family even in a situation when I do not have money, and that family cannot be replaced by anything |
