The reading passage contends the benefits of the advertisements. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up several points that contradict this argument.
First of all,the speaker argues that the advertisements are not informational. They tend to repeat the comments over and over again. Also, they are apt to miss the information of the products. However, by doing so, it promotes customers and desire them to buy more products that are not really necessary.
This casts doubt on the reading, which states that the advertisements is a good way to instruct the customers such as letting them know the available and the sale time.
Second, according to the lecturer, the advertisements make the products more expensive. For example, during the super bowl time, the money that the company spend for the advertisement is outrageous, so they raise the price of products to get more benefits out of it. This refutes the reading passage's assertion that the customers can buy many cheap products as they access to the media easily.
The final point made in the lecture is that the advertisements encourage the customers buy more and more products than they can actually afford, so eventually, the customers pay them as a credit, and it is definitely not beneficial for the economy. This rebuffs the reading passage's argument that as the customers spend money for the products that were advertised, it is very good for the economy. |
