Topic : it's more important to give students award for their effort than achievement
|
A large number of students have felt discouraged from studying hard because their grades did not seem to reflect on their effort. To prevent this, many teachers suggest evaluating students based on the effort rather than the test scores. However, in order to sustain fairness and to lead students more professionally, I believe that students should be compensated for the outcome instead on the effort.
To begin with, it is impossible to assess effort because it is subjective. To justify an award or prize, objective criterion is required. Qualities such as the degree of concentration, the amount of time slept, and the hours spent on studying are subjective and hard to judge, which can bring about complaints from students if this type of evaluation will take place in schools. For example, one of my not so bright school peers put in much effort for class by spending extra time reviewing lessons and taking notes. However, his grade was the lowest in the class. Out of pity, the teacher changed his final grade for trying hard, believing that this would prevent him from giving up. However, this caused many unhappy students who complained that it was unfair.
In addition, an education placing a higher value on the result rather than process can play an important role in getting students ready for the real world. Of course, a consistent effort is necessary to succeed, but in the competitive modern society, working hard does not guarantee success. In fact, an excessive emphasis on effort can deter students from studying efficiently. To prove this, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Education in Korea, 2008, there were two groups of parents; those who only pushed their children to try and those who demanded straight A’s. The outcome was noticeably different in the percentage of college enrolment. In the latter group, there was a higher percentage of acceptances. This implies that when students are trained to focus on trying, they are unlikely to care about the outcome, thus decreasing work efficiency.
In brief, to teach students not only fairly but also competitively, teachers should encourage students to focus more on the outcomes. Good outcomes are accompanied by a productive studying method as the popular saying goes, “Heaven helps those who help themselves”.
