Some parents and teachers think that taking a test and giving a grade is a good way to encourage students to study. However, I strongly believe that marks frustrate rather than motivate students to learn because marks cannot be reflective of abilities of students and students get stressed with grades.
First of all, it is important to note that grades cannot refelct talents of students properly. It is true that giving a grade is an efficient method to measure how much knowledge students have. However, knowledge is just a trivial part of abilities of students. Thus, it is possilbe that some students get lower grades than expected even though they are smart and study hard. Thus, they can be disappinted and lose interests about subjects. This is why many elementary schools in Korea do not adopt grading systems. Instead of giving individual grades, teachers evaluate abilties of students through describing their behaviors or assessing group activities.
Another significant drawback of grades is that students can suffer from stress to get higher grades. In this era of competition, modern people are under severe stress. Schools are not an exception for competition. Because grades can affect their educational backgrouds, students try to get higher grades and compete with their friends. The problem is that students are not mature mentally and cannot endure mental stress induced by harsh competition while in the society, adults can handle it. In Korea, one socialogical research revealed that more than 10 young students commit suicide annually because they do not get desirable grades. Therefore, grades give mental stress to students and students can lose their curiosity about subjects.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that grades deter students from learning because they are not perfect reflectives of abilties of students and students can get stressed to get higher grades. There is no doubt that interests of students rather than grades are the most significant factor to motivate students. | |
