I disagree on this statement. i think it is better to keep our attention on the earth, where we are living in, rather than the obscure space.
There are tons of areas on the Earth that we haven't even ventured nor have any clue what it is like. for example, ninety percent of the earth is covered with water and most of them, we haven discovered yet. There is huge potential of finding, for example, new materials, new living things on earth instead of ailians from Mars, or new civilizations that might had sunk under water like Atlantis.
Space is too big to treat with our technology yet. It takes years to get to the neighbor planet. Nevertheless, how long will it take to get to other solar system, or Earth-like planet that we can use? Astronomers are talking about thousands of light years. Neither we do have technology to get light speed spaceship, nor we live that long time to see the change.
Funding for the outer space isn't a bad idea if we are talking about far future. However, it is obvious, just like we should know our neighbors bofore our exotic penpal, that we should manipulate our own planet, and then move on to the next step, outer space.
