▶ Your Answer :
The professor in the lecture talks about a research on the effect of
making groups on doing projects conducted by a company. With the result of the
study, the lecturer casts doubt on the points in the given passage, which
argues that building a team to attack a project offers several benefits.
First, the company found out that some people in the groups had been
free-riders. When a certain group's work was evaluated to be great, the
free-riders got the same benefit of recognition on the work done by the team,
even though they had contributed to the work much less than other members. In
other words, the members who had offered a lot of insight and contribution to
the project could not get an opportunity to "shine" individually,
since greatness of the work was attributed to the team as a whole, not to
individual workers.
Second, the speaker rejects the argument that a group can response to
the task more quickly than an individual. He emphasizes that a group work takes
longer time given the time-consuming characteristic of making consensus among
the people with diverse points of view. Additionally mentioned by the professor
is that attending the group meetings takes up much of time either.
Third, it should also be taken into account that one or two influential
members might lead the group to the direction they want. In that case, it is
possible that different perspectives from normal members are discarded so the
group work includes an one-sided point of view
on solving a problem. What is worse is that, according to the lecture, when the
work fails, the blame would be for all the members, not only for those
influential workers.
