Some people think that today's parents understand their children as well as parents did fifty years ago. However, I have a different idea of it. First of all, they live in different lifestyle with the past days. Secondly, development of the technology had a bad influence on the gap between parents and their children. Let me explain why I think so.
To begin with, recent society lifestyle decrease opportunities to make a strong bond with their children. In recent society, a lot of parents required to do work much time than the past, hence, they do not have enough time to spend with their children.
For example, recent society required much time to work than the past, also actually there a significant increase of the both of working parents. It means that they do not have enough time to make a memory or talk with their children. If they do not allow opportunities to talk each other, parents could not know the children's problem or interests and it will widen the gap between the parents and children.
On top of that, In modern times, there are more things children can enjoy alone than in the past with the development of technology. Due to the advance of technology such as the internet, children less feel to interact with their parent in spare time. For instance, unlike the fifty years ago, recent children tend to more enjoy computer game and searching the internet rather than spend a time with their parents. According to research from the University of Maryland, the children who enjoy using the smartphone tend to have 70% less conversation than others.
To sum up, today's parents have a hard to understand their children. Firstly, they are busier than the past due to work. In addition, development of recent technology widens the gap between parents and children.
In this regard, I agree that modern parents could not understand their children as well as they did in the past.
