▶ Your Answer : These days, among lots of issue related to school education, whether to consider art and music as school course or not is ongoing debate. Some people think that art and music are not that essential to be taught in school. However, I think that school ought to teach children art and music as mandatory school subject along with other academic subjects.
To begin with, experiencing artistic materials helps children develop imagination. Children will face tons of unusual and unexpected situations during their life, which won't be able to be solved by ordinary thoughts. Imagination, which is critical for them to cope with such situations, is important aspect to live better life. But it children only learn academic subjects like math, history or science, they are not able to develop their imagination. Instead, taking art and music course in school are likely to help students to improve their imagination. My elementary school, for example, taught students art and music about 10 hours a week, which was similar to language class. And when the school conducted aptitude test on students, the school's students got 17 percent higher than average of teenagers in imagination level.
On top of that, setting art and music as obligatory subjects in school allows future artists to be found. Since children are more likely to b imaginative and flexible than adults, society should actively look for future artists from school. If we have art of music class in school, we can easily catch the students who have high potential in artistic field. Furthermore, school can also help them to grow as precious artists. In reality, a number of famed artists are discovered by school teachers. For instance, Kim, Beom-su, Korean famous singer, was suggested to study vocal by the music teacher when he was high school student. He had never imagined himself being a singer, but his teacher caught his potential to be an artist when seeing him humming a song, and this led him to be the number one singer of Korea.
In this regard, school should teach art and music as mandatory subjects because it enables students to improve their imagination which is essential to live better life, and it helps potential artist to be discovered.
