Recently, Seoul has decided to destroy the old city hall building and replace it with new modern builing and the construction is in progress. Many people thought that the city hall should be a nice modern building because it represents the city. However, I stronlgy believe that every city should try to preserve old, historic buildings because they are part of histroy and are helpful for education of children and for local economy.
First of all, old buildings in a city are a prat of its history. There are always usages and purposes of buildings and old buildings can tell what historical event braught their constructions. Besides, styles of architectures and sorts of materials utilized in historic buildings can provide information about art history and society at that time. It is also noteworthy that a city can never get back historical buildings after it destroys them. If a city continues replacing old contructs with new ones, it would have no buildings telling about its histroy.
Another advantage of old buildings is that they can provide good chances for education. Even though all children learn about history at schools, reading books is not effiecent in studying history. It is well known that students can obtain knowledge better through visual stimuli and experiences. Therefore, now it is prevailing that children go out of schools and experience historical sites with their own eyes. Historical buildings in a city can be suitable for this educational purpose. For example, in Seoul, it is easy to find elementary school students visiting old palaces sited in the center of the city. They listen what teachers explain about the palaces and can learn about Korean histroy better.
Also, preserving historical buildings is good for local economy. As more people enjoy travelling, tourism is emerging as an alternative market to enforce local economy. Historical heritage of a city is one of the reasons why tourists visit the city. Rome is an extreme example and most of visitors come to Rome to see famous historical buildings with their own eyes. Like this, a city can preserve and advertise its historical buildings to attract more tourists.
People tend to want novel things. However, it cannot apply to history. I firmly believe that a city should conserve its old and historical constructs because they are contained in its history and can be advatageous for education and local economy. | |
