There has been an argument about the issue that studying science and mathematics is far more important than to learn history and literature. Some people may argue that the latter one is more significant for people's lives as such subject offers students good reading skill and an opportunity to foresee future. However, from my perspective, mathematics and science are more crucial because it presents students with practical knowledge that can be applied to this fast-developing society and great sense of creativity.
To begin with, one can get much practical assist by learning the subjects. This is because science technologies that require skills in science and mathematics have been improved so far and it affect our lives greatly. Hence, by knowing in what mechanism such devices used science technology is being operated, the student would be a more prepared one for this fast-developing society. For example, I once had a friend who wanted to major in Statistics. As the particular department requires good grades in science and math, he invested great amount of time for the subjects. Then, I happened to go hiking with him, and was having trouble finding the way out of the mountain. However, after several minutes of struggling, he had made compass out of dissembled cell phone parts and could safely get back to home. Therefore, studying math and science is more important than studying literature and history.
Moreover, studying the subjects would foster one's creativity. This is because studying mathematics and science require students to apply what they have learned to many situations. In contrary, other subjects including history and literature simply want student to accept and memorize theories and facts. According the study conducted by Korea University in Korea, students who are majoring subjects that are related to math and science are more likely to be engaged in well-paid jobs than those who are majoring in other fields of study like literature and history. When interviewed, the recruiters responded that it is because the former students are more creative than the latter students and it is such creativity rather than simple knowledge that they are expecting from employees.
To conclude, I believe that it is more important for students to study science and math than to learn history and literature. This is because the subjects would give pragmatic help to the students. Also, creativity that the subjects are likely to give is another element that makes learning science and math more attractive. |
