In this era of globalisation, people are exposed to lots of opportunities to live in foreign countries. They often face some issues when they move to different countries. One of the main issues is choosing whether to follow the customs of the new country or to preserve one's own customs. However, people who obey the country's customs are increasing mainly due to the convenience in life and more chances of employment.
First of all, accepting the customs means one can respect and understand the particular customs thoroughly. This reduces conflicts, misunderstanding and controversy. For instance, in Middle East, revealing clothing is considered as a crime. This custom is hard to follow especially in scorching weather but if people ignore and reject it, they are in serious trouble such as a jail sentence or a heavy fine. Some may think that this is non-sense and ridiculous but if one desires complete settlement in this country, they have to endure such customs. The easiest and fastest way of adapting in the foreign country is to follow the customs as it is not questioning.
In addition, enterprises tend to prefer local employees because they know the culture, language, local information by heart. Immigrants often have difficulty to find a job due to lack of understanding of the country. To take a personal example, my sister was talented in Japanese since she was in high school and she longed for working in Japanese for animation production. Despite other people's expectation that she would fail, she could obtain a stable job in a short time because she had vast amount of knowledge about Japan through media and exchange student program. According to her experience, following the customs such as bowing and using polite language to elders in Japan, people can succeed in employment.
In conclusion, "when in Rome do as the Romans do" is the saying that tells people what is right and wise thing to do when visiting or moving to the new country. It also emphasises the fact that accepting the customs is much beneficial in life and working environment.
