Q. Effective ways to learn English in a country where English is not the native language.
Nowadays, increased number of people are going to English-speaking countries to learn English. However, through worldwide communications among nations and improved technology, there are a number of methods to efficiently study English in countries where it is not their native language. People can greatly improve their English skills through frequently watching English speaking movies, making a pen-pal in an English speaking country, and taking some time to practice English in everyday life.
First of all, watching movies featuring English speaking actors are helpful for improving English skills. There are numerous benefits from just taking an hour or two, enjoying the movie. In movies, characters are usually in real-life situations, so people can learn expressions that are frequently used in everyday life. Also, pronunciation gets improved by repeatedly listening to a native speaker’s pronunciation. For example, I enjoy watching the ‘Gossip Girl’ these days and it is really advantageous for my English study. If I find one of the characters’ sayings interesting, I try to imitate that person and it inadvertently develops my pronunciation.
Moreover, having a pen-pal in an English speaking country is beneficial. By exchanging letters or e-mails, you can improve grammars and language expressions. My friend has a pen-pal who lives in New York. About two years ago, before my friend met her American pen-pal, her English was just at an average level. She received acceptable grades in her English class, but it really wasn’t getting any better. However, after she made a pen-pal in New York, her English improved significantly. She said because she enjoyed exchanging letters with her pen-pal, she also got interested in studying English, which made her study more frequently, and even give her confidence in communicating in English. Now she is studying harder than ever to fly to New York in summer to meet her pen-pal.
In addition, utilizing free times in everyday life to practice English is an effective method to learn English. Nothing is better than regular practices. For instance, on the bus heading to school on mornings, I listen to CNN news on my mp3 player. During free hours at school, I speak in English with our school’s native teacher. She corrects my grammars and helps me with pronunciations of complex vocabularies. Also, once or twice in a week, I call my cousin who lives in the U.S.A and talk about each other’s everyday life, of course, in English. Just a few minutes every day can really make a huge difference.
In conclusion, I believe there are numerous ways to successfully learn English even in countries where English is not the principal language. Watching English speaking movies, making a pen-pal who lives in America, and practicing English regularly, I believe, are of the best ways to do so. As the saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way.
