Those who think that judging on first impression means judging on one's appearance or prejudice might agree with the above statement. However, I think that one's first impression contains more reasonable and exact informations about that person's personality. There are two major reasons : impressions doesn't mean just appearances and human being's quick judgements are quite more accurate than we think it would be.
First, when we say 'first impression', we don't indicate 'impression' just as appearance. Impression is not a photo of him or her. It includes his or her manner, mood(such as whether he or she is mild or not, or cold or not), facial expressions, attitude, habitual actions that even he or she doesn't know about, and personality. All these are reflected into the 'impression'. For example, if somebody who you meet first doesn't face you looking into your eyes well, your can deduce that he or she is a person of the type having a timid or mild personality.
Moreover, human's instinctive estimation of something or someone is not only very fast but also accurate. For the latter, some might not agree with, however, somewhere on TV, I've ever heard of that, in a viewpoint of evolution of human beings, human beings have evolved getting better in quick judgement, because in old days it was very important to judge quickly and accurately for survival in daily wild life. If they saw something or someone, they had to judge quickly whether it was a dangerous thing or not.
In a nutshell, I disagree with the statement that one's first impression is not desirable basis for judging so far as one's inner part because impression doesn't mean just appearance but include one's mood or even personality and first impression is also pretty much reliable and trustworthy than we think it would be by its evolutional reasoning. |
