In today’s world, watching film has become one of the most popular ways of enjoying one’s spare time. Corresponding with its popularity, many people have different opinions about their favorite movie genre. Personally, I prefer to watch serious movies that leave me with a lot to think about. The rationale behind this belief is that I can learn valuable lessons from those kinds of movie. On top of that, such movie genres broaden my perspective towards today’s volatile issues.
To begin with, I can find many valuable lessons from serious movies since they usually convey very specific messages in their story line. Such messages can provide a great motivation to me, or sometimes makes me determined so that I can overcome any challenging problems. For example, In one of my favorite sci-fi movies called Gattaca, the main character is a normal person who wishes to become a spaceship crew. Unfortunately, the job is only permitted for the people whose DNA is modified before their birth, meaning that they are genetically superior. However, the main character never gives up his dream, but instead, he does everything that he can do in order to achieve his goal; he gets a blood supply from a disabled person whose DNA is considered suitable for a space job, and passes all the exams required to qualify for the job. After I watched the movie, I was deeply impressed by his passion and desire. So, whenever I became frustrated, I tried to think of him. This greatly helped me surmount my tough problems. If it were not for the movie, I would never have been able to accomplish anything but given up many things.
In addition, serious movies allow me to see what other people think about today’s issues. This is possible sine the vast majority of serious movies deal with social issues that need to be addressed to the public. After watching a movie, I can share my views about the movie and also can listen to others’ opinions and their interpretations about the movie. To illustrate, I found the movie, Fahrenheit 911, very interesting. This was because the director of film had a very distinct idea that triggered my curiosity that the whole 911 terror was manipulated by the United States government. Surely this contained a great deal of unverified ideas, but had sufficient logic to support its opinion. I watched this movie with my friends and after we watched the movie, we had a discussion about the movie. Surprisingly, all of my friends, including myself, had a different opinion about the movie. One of them said that the director must be a genius who has a great analytic ability. In contrast, others disregarded the movie by saying it was a well-maid documentary, but nothing more than it.
In conclusion, if I have to choose watching between a comedy and a serious movie, I will select the latter without any hesitation. The reasons are such as I can learn a lot of important principles of life that serious movies have in their story lines, and also it offers me a chance to know other people’s interpretations about the movie by having a discussion about the movie. |
