Certainly, various transportation systems play significant roles in many of the places where people work or play. Some people might say that cars have had a greater impact on society than airplanes, while others think differently. If I were to answer the question, I would say that airplanes had more significant influence on modern society than cars for several reasons.
To begin with, airplanes had allowed people to have a broader view by exploring abroad. Traveling foreign countries exposes people to new cultures, customs, and lifestyles. Such exposures are likely to make them realize that different values exist, understand this diversity and ultimately be comfortable with them. For example, when I was 8 years old, I saw one of my classmates from Ethiopia eating meals with bare hands. I felt uncomfortable by his behaviour because it was my first time seeing someone like him. I kept distance from him and made fun of him. However, I got used to this cultural difference after traveling to Africa by an airplane last summer. I realized that we just had different eating styles. In fact, we had a lot in common in a way that we all cared about our family and friends, were committed to our relationship and got easily hurt by what others say. I no longer make fun of people from different backgrounds and can be friends with them. Without airplanes, I would have not been able to travel Africa, which provided me a chance to broaden my horizon.
In addition, airplanes have improved the standard of living. The invention of airplanes produced more business sectors, more job positions and higher household incomes. This trend saved people from poverty, ultimately contributing to the overall national economic growth. For example, in the 1990s, Korea has suffered from poverty and economic recession. In the late 1990s, the government began to invest billions of dollars in the production of airplanes. Eventually, this investment was able to reduce poverty rate as well as unemployment rate. The most contributing factor was that airplanes allowed people from foreign countries to come to Korea, which prompted more tourism. The job sector such as traveling agencies provided people more job opportunities such as tour guides and earn income for their household. In other words, employment within these job sectors brought prosperity to people. On the other hand, cars did not have a big influence on the national economy since it did not prompted much industries compared to those caused by airplanes.
To sum up, the impacts that airplanes had on society far outweigh those of cars for the reasons I have mentioned above. All in all, the importance that airplanes had on our society should not be overestimated in life. |
