History, by its definition, refers to the study of the bast. (What does it indicate"bast"?) It is necessary in predicting present and future from interpreting the past. This is the prime reason why history is included in most countries as formal education, despite the fact that it requires massive reading and memorization. Should one ask whether university students should also be required to take history courses, I would answer in the affirmative. This is because learning history aids in in deepening one's study in their own field. Also, learning history allows people to feel attached to others. The
First of all, learning history in university permits students to gain an in-depth understanding of their field of study as history, most of the times, is interrelated. Although one may study a seemingly different study, at the core, historical evidence and historical knowledge play a crucial role. As a biologist major, I found this out when I was a freshman at university. I realized that even when studying the DNA structure, an insight of how scientists' research and findings of the DNA have evolved throughout time and how it progressed is significant. Only after understanding the past scientists' interpretation of the DNA researched in the past, I could comprehend the current depiction of the DNA structure and the fundamental reasons why the structures were termed are named that way. I believe that history is interlinked with many other fields, making it an inevitable subject of study in any fields.
Second, learning history makes people to feel patriotic and get to know the elderly people better. While the university is dedicated to teaching students their chosen major, their ensuing goal is to educate students to prepare them to grow up so that they are well prepared as adults. Knowing about the world history and, or at least the history of their own country, permits student to feel a sense of patriotism and also to feel connected when talking with people from variety of age group. This is why history should be mandatory and be studied within major or as liberal arts. My example can be used here to explain this further. When I was a senior, (High school? University?) I was obliged to attend Korean history class in order to graduate. I complained and considered the subject insignificant. (Unclear) Nevertheless, after the class had finished, I noticed that the historical information learned from that class actually has aided me in talking with my grandparents. By learning the Korean history through secondary sources, I still managed to sympathize with them, and also better anticipate how life would have been in those days.
It is true that history is known to be a tedious subject, covering numerous collection of lengthy sources. However, due to its interconnectedness in nearly all fields and due to the fact that history prepares students to be more connected to the society, it should be regarded important at university as well.
