▶ Your Answer :
Some people think that providing students
with grade promotes learning. However, in my opinion, it is exactly not. This
is because as using this method, students would feel more stress than did not.
And some students may facilitate a kind of unjustified way to test.
To begin with, when students receive a
scored material with lower grades, they would be disappointed and this is able
to inflict the students to stress. Because getting higher score is very
difficult, a lot of students would give up the test.
For example, a study was conducted by
Students Institution to determine whether visible grades could affect students’
learning. The researchers monitored the score of 200 students over a 3 year
period. What they found was intriguing. The students who received grade had
lower score than those who had not. This study proves that providing marked
materials had a negative effect.
On top of that, although students attend
the test, they are inclined to use unjustified methods because they want to get
high score. In fact, using this allows them to receive remarkable grades, so
most of students are attempted to use it.
For instance, there was a poll conducted by
Students In Earnest with students as respondents. The purpose of the survey was
to understand the consensus view of using unjustified method. The majority of
the respondents ranked ‘Yes’ over ‘Nope’ because they thought it would be more
favorable. An overwhelming 70% had responded that they know it is not a good
way, though, when they used this way,
they got higher score. This survey proves that people have a negative view of
marking their test.
To sum up, if students’ test materials have
to be scored, concern about lower grades leads students to feel stress and
probability of using unjustified methods would increased during the test.
In this regard, I firmly believe that
offering students with grade is ineffective way to encourage learning. |
