Some people think that classes consisted
mostly of lectures and have few discussions are much more efficient than
classes which involve a lot of interactions among students and teachers. However,
in my opinion, classes with active interaction are better than those without.
To
begin with, students would be able to develop discussion skills by taking classes
with frequent discussions and talks. By having chances to discuss with other
students and teachers, they will learn how to effectively convey their thoughts
and to understand others’ thoughts as well. Also, as these kinds of discussion
skills and communication skills are considered quite crucial these days when
getting jobs, it would help them compete better pursuing their careers in the
future. For example, there was a search done by Korean Board of Education to
figure out whether classes with active participation of students help them
improve their communication skills. There were two groups observed each of 100
students and had about the same discussion skills at the beginning. One of them
was asked to take the class which was mainly given as a form of lecture, and
the other one was requested to take the highly interactive class which dealt
with the same materials as the class the former group had taken. After an year,
researchers evaluated each group students’ communicative and discussion skills
by making students have debate with each other without any preparation ahead.
They compared students’ scores, and was surprised to find out students of the
latter group excelled in scores of discussion and interactive skills. This
research demonstrates that classes with discussions let students learn how to
have better discussions with others.
On
top of that, classes with a lot of discussions would let students get easily
familiar with their classmates and make more friends by taking the class. There
are much more chances to get familiar with classmates when having discussions
as they help out students to start conversations with each other. By sharing
their ideas and listening carefully to others’ opinions as a part of their
class activities, they would naturally overcome their shyness and easily become
friends. I would like to give an example of mine to elucidate my point. Last
year, I took a politics class. There were 15 students in the class, and all of
students were majoring in different areas being complete strangers to each
other. At first, all of us never tried to talk to other students or to get
along with each other. However, as the class had a lot of discussion activities
sharing our opinions of current governmental issues which forced us to talk to
each other, we could easily become friends after a few weeks of the class. At
the end of the semester, we exchanged our phone numbers and even went on dining
together. This example illustrates that classes with discussions can help
students have better relationships with other classmates as they promote students
to easily become friends with others.
To
sum up, classes which provide students with a number of chances to speak and
discuss with other students help them better equipped with great communication
skills and make more friends in classes. In this regard, I firmly believe that
classes with a lot of discussions are better than classes highly dependent on
one-way convey of information by teachers.
