In today’s complex world, it is often said that the same grade should be given to all individuals in group. Some people agree with this idea since they believe it is the main purpose of giving group assignment. However, I object to the statement that all group members should receive the same grade. The rationale behind this belief is that not all group members work hard to complete their project. On top of that, there is a certain member who definitely deserves to have a better evaluation than others in the team
To begin with, It is true that some people in group do not make much contribution, but they receive the same evaluation on the project. Those so-called “free riders” obviously do not deserve to have the same treatment since their contribution is almost unrecognizable. From my personal experience, when I was working on presentation with a couple of my fellow workers, one of them really did not do anything helpful to the project. He never showed up at group meeting or finished his part of project in promised time. Although he has not made any contribution to the presentation, he received the same grade in the end because it was a team project. As this incident reveals, it is absolutely unfair for those who worked really hard receive the same grade regardless of their contribution to the work.
In addition, I believe a leader of group should deserve a better evaluation. Whether it is an easy task or tough task, being a leader of something requires a great deal of time and effort. It is mainly because a leader is responsible for virtually every part of work ranging from dividing work to each individual in team to making the final output. For instance, my brother was a leader of his debate club. During his time to prepare for a debate competition, I often saw my brother stayed up until very late night, and also saw him with a bunch of reference. Even though all teammates were responsible for their work, he had to make sure every work is good enough. Because of this stressful job, my brother lost twenty pounds within two weeks. In this respect, it may be reasonable to offer a different evaluation to a leader of group as a means of compensation for his hard work.
In conclusion, I strongly object to the idea that all group members deserve to receive the same grade on their work. This argument become clear when we consider the factors, such as, there are always some free riders in group whose contribution to work is hardly recognizable, and also a leader of group deserves to get a better evaluation since his work is much more demanding than others. |
