Will people have more leisure time twenty years from now? Some people may insist that perhaps people will have less leisure time, citing that people will spend more time to work in order to try to survive in competitive society. There can be diverse opinion on this issue depending on individual. However, I fundamentally agree with the statement that people will be able to have more leisure time than they do today. The reasoning behind this is that not only technological advance but also policy changes of government make it possible. First of all, technological advance would makes labors have more leisure time. To put it again, it is possible that labor power, in particular manual labor, will be substituted for machine power. Suppose that new machines that can be used in driving a screw are introduced in an assembly plant. Then assemblers would no longer need to do it so that they could gain more time to spend for themselves. In this sense, there is no doubt that leisure time will increase in twenty years. In addition, there is every possibility that government will design new policy that makes people have more leisure to encourage demand for leisure services. As a quality of life improves, the leisure industry becomes one of the most noticeable areas as a high-profit business. As a result, every government tries to ensure more leisure time of labors in an economic point of view. That several Asian governments recently gave effect to the law which enforces a 5-day week is a good example that shows this current of the times. All things considered, I strongly agree with the opinion that people will have more leisure time than they do today twenty years from now. That is because technological advance and government’s effort to stimulate the economy will make people to spend more leisure time. |
