Some people believe that a college or university education should be available to all students. Others believe that higher education should be available only to good students. Discuss these views. Which view do you agree with? Explain why. |
Unlike the past, most of the high school graduates go to universities or colleges and its number of the population is approximately approaching 90%. Compared to that of the American students, which is 45%, the passion and the fever the Koreans have for education is enormously powerful. This has constructed the social conception that almost every high graduate goes to universities or colleges in Korea. On the other hand, it is true that there is criticism over the issue, arguing that the Korean government should limit the number of the students for the higher educational services. I will provide the details and examples that illustrate both positions. Many people have proclaimed that all students can go to universities or colleges if they wish to study there. One of their arguments is that every student has the right to receive the educational benefits equally. Universities and colleges are not places for special students but those who want to study for special interests. In fact, one of my friends who had great interests and potentials to make comic books but did not have enough grades to apply to the university became a professional comic book writer after he was trained at the university that appreciated his phenomenal capabilities. In addition, they argue that many students discover new hopes and directions for what they want to do in the future in a university or a college. This is because they wished to focus on studying school subjects but did not substantial time to think about their future at the high school. To illustrate, when I went to the university and had a great opportunity to take some courses at Penn State University as an exchange student and I decided to be an English teacher after the occasion. As these examples show well, it is extremely desirable for any student to be able to attend higher educational programs. However, other critics have been persuasive and logical to insist that higher education should be available only to good students. What they argue is, firstly, the quality of the education in Korea has been gradually decreasing because of the system that allows unable students to get into the university or the college. Many students tend to fall behind professors’ syllabuses and class managements. The KoreaStar satirized communication and trust between professors and the students as the destroyed Berlin Wall. Furthermore, the critics have suggested that the government pours too much money to build and maintain universities and college every year. This kind of national financial waste has attributed to an astronomical number of universities and colleges which are greedy to collect as many students as they can. Problematizing that 4 trillion public capitals were invested to universities and colleges last year, the government has attempted to alter the current law for the matter. Judging from these educational phenomena, taking all students to higher educational is also disadvantageous in the long term perspective. Considering as many as perspectives as possible concerning whether the higher educational programs should open to all students or be limited to only special students, it is extremely hard to argue which is better for the development of Korean education. Because all the ideas and specific practices are true and convincing, it is dangerous to have slapdash perspectives for the agenda. Although opening universities and colleges to every student is tempting, it may be bringing tremendous disasters to the students, professors, and schools if we just take it carelessly. |
