In today’s fast-paced world, some old people cannot keep in step with the rapid development of technology and changes in trends. That’s why some people would argue that there are not many things to learn from older people. Older people, however, have diverse know-how, skills, ability to give us proper advices, and real past stories to tell. For above reasons I strongly believe that older people are better source of learning than younger people. To begin with, older people have great capabilities that can help young people. As they have lived in a real world longer than young people, they have accumulated know-how and skills through their careers. They can hand over those abilities to young people, and would be greatly helpful to young novices. From my personal experience, I learned a lot of useful skills such as ways to interact with potential clients and make appropriate contract documents, business phone etiquettes from my senior employee when I just started the internship in the trade company.
In addition, it is obvious that older people are more likely to give us appropriate advices than younger people. The older people have more experience on various kind of people. Every person has different personality. So we have to vary our interacting skills depending on a person. That kind of ability cannot be earned through textbooks. It requires time and experiences to be obtained. To illustrate, my father has given me many crucial advices through my life. He always advises me with many example stories based on my personality, and his experiences on different type of people. I never have regretted accepting his advices because it always turned out as excellent results.
Finally, older people are able to tell young people the real past stories of themselves. Some of my peers may be able to teach me many things including histories. But it is impossible for them to illustrate the past that they have never been. Older people, on the other hand, allow young people to understand the differences between past and present more easily by describing their own past lives. For example, my mom used to describe her lives in 1970s that I only learned through books. There were more details in her real story and I could have got more actual feelings of 1970s atmosphere than learning through books. To sum up, old people are precious source of learning for several reasons. Young people can get useful know-how, skills as well as proper advices and real stories of the past. All things considered, old people should be considered as a people who can teach us more than our peers. |
