Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present |
Some people say that learning our history is waste of our time. Therefore, we need to spend our time to focus on the present. Yet, it's nonsense since we can be taught from the past events. For example, in the World War Two, US government finished war by using nuclear bomb. It's for sure that terrible war's end was good for everybody besides Japan. After war in Japan, the regions where was bombarded with nuclear bomb had worst fallout ever in our history. So, people learn that we should not use at least nuclear bombs during combats. Of course, no war is beneficial to everybody even though it's idealistic because people are all different and there are always debate. In addition, it's clear that we can prevent some bad events which possibly can happen later by learning the past. That's why government officials learn not only their own histories, but world history. To illustrate, there was a terrible terror which is called 9/11 terror. Reasons why it happend turned out that US governmet was absentminded. Accordingly, nowadays, they reinforce their defense level. For instance, in the airport, they make their terms of secutiry harder. Few weeks ago, I had a chance to go to Los Angeles and I could experience more strict secutiry. Judging from my experience, hijacking is now hard to be happened. USA learned expensive lesson from 9/11 terror which become precious now though. To sum up, the idea that we can't learn anything from the past is wrong. From history, human beings can be introduced serious study of world's civilization and cultivates a perspective through which they can see themselves as individuals with opportunities and resposibilities in a modern, post-indutrial world. We can not deny that learning history is to initiate a study of the human condition in the broadest sense of the term. |
