Unlike many other Western cultures, Eastern cultures have a unique culture; the elderly and teachers are more respected than many Western cultures. I am not saying that one is better or one is more desirable than the other. However, in my point of view, when asking for better ideas, we can slove problems in a more creative way for the following reasons.
The first advantage of asking advice for the other people is due to the fact that our own knowledge is confined and just one of myraids of people's experience, so my solution is not always correct. If you look around, you can see many other people have diverse backgrounds such as diverse ethnicities, cultures, educations, the way of thinking, and so on. Likewise, my own experience or knowldege is just one of them. Among the numerous people, am I always correct? Impossible! Therefore, it is very beneficial to ask other people for advice when encountering unexpected problmes. For example, when I was preparing for my thesis in my graduate school, I selected one topic as for my thesis that I thought was perfect, so I did everything that needed for myself without conculting for the topic. After 30 days hard work, I visited my professor's office to report my topic. To my surprise, he asked me to change the topic that I thought the most intersting one in the world. However, it was impossible for me to continue my paper work without the help of my professor, so I had no choice but to change the topic. After a while, I noticed that my topic was already addressed by many researchers and considered to be useless. How stupid I was! I have wated my valuable time because of my mistake. As such, the experinced and skillful adviser is essential to achivement of any fields because I am not always perfect.
Another benefit of asking advice is that it can enrich his or her own experience or knowldege. As I have mentioned above, diverse experience or knowldege from other people can also make his or her experience or knowledge more colorful. For example, when I was doing a group projcet, I had a chance to work with diverse ethnic people such as Chinsese, Japanese, Indian, French, and Korean. Compared with other groups, our team made the project more successful and we all got a good grade in the course. At first, I thought that what good the diverse group members were, and I doubted the diverse group would only make it diffcicult to understand each other because of a language barrier. It was true that we had minor problems in communicating. Nevertheless, in the end our project turned out to be very colorful, enriching, and profound one because the diverse group can come up with more various approaches to the project than other groups. The example shows how much valuable it was to ask and consult with other people whether they had a different language.
All things considered, it is evident that consulting other people for advice is not only necessary but also mandatory because the simple act will take us out of prejudice or confinement, and it will also make our solution more colorful than before. |
