which do you prefer, watching movies or reading books? |
Introduction: should include a "THESIS STATEMENT". In order to do so, 1) catch reader's interest. 2) express the topic and writer's attitude, opinion, or idea about topic.] ** In students' essay, it will be better to have a very clear thesis statement. There are three types of introduction: The Funnel Type, Shared Experience Type, and The Turnabout Type. 1. The Funnel Type:
A general statement about a topic --> more specific thesis statement. In your general idea, make sure that it includes key words. In your case, it should include, "reading book" or "watching TV". You might start with:
“Many people spend their spare time either watching TV or reading a book.” 2. Shared Experience Type:
Begin with a sentence that makes the reader feel involved. Use "us", "our", "we", "you", or "your" in your first sentence. And the these sentences should lead into your thesis statement. You might start with:
“If I tell you that I spend most of my spare time watching TV, you might respond to me that watching TV is not good for my health or it is a wasting my time."
3. The Turnabout Type:
Begin with a statement or statements contrary to your thesis statement. I guess this is the most popular type of introduction in this Hackers bulletin board. In this type of introduction, introduce the opposite view with words of contrast like “however”, “on the other hand”, or “in fact”. Then, introduce your opinion in the thesis statement. In this given topic, you might write:
“Most researchers have proved that watching TV is harmful regardless of what is on. However, I do prefer watching TV to reading a book.”
