Especially, in education fields, it is highly debatable whether classes based on frequent discussions are preferred by current students. This is an intriguing question because opinions concerning this issue can be different individual’s perspectives. In general, the consensus view seems to be that it is beneficial classes with many lectures and nearly no discussions for students. In my opinion, however, I personally think that school should encourage their students to have more discussions in their classes for the following two subsequent reasons.
First and foremost, classes based on discussions allow each student to participate in their courses through active movements. In other words, passive classes focused on conveying lectures are limited to one-sided pedagogy of education. To be specific, students can expand their academic performances effectively by sharing and accepting individual background knowledge and own experiences. For example, when I was a high school student, Henry, my best teacher of mine who gave a lecture on Social Communications, always started his lecture by opening active discussions. Our class mates enjoyed the time to share opinions and experiences. He tended to reduce parts of explanation in his class within less than ten minutes. Thanks to his wise, my peers were able to directly learn about the social communication.
In addition, discussions enable students to broaden perspectives and views since they can develop speech skills and confidences by interacting with each other. Specifically, discussions and posing a question after a presentation require self-confidence and skillful ability to prepare presentations. On the other hand, simply participating in the class as a timid participant makes student foolish. For instance, there is a poll conducted by Johns Hopkins University with 500 students majoring in pedagogy as a respondent. The purpose of this survey is to understand about the importance of animated discussions in a class. According to the poll, the majority of respondents said, current high schools should put more emphasis on the active discussions that increase the quality of curriculums. An overwhelming 89 percent admitted that it helps students prepare their future academic performances in terms of University or Graduated Schools.
Taking sharing own experiences with each other and preparation of future academy into consideration, I strongly believe that current schools should encourage active discussions in their classes academically. Never should we forget that this issue may have a huge impact on our future.
