It is debatable whether young people in modern times are better able to make decisions about their own lives than those in the old days. In general, some people might think that today young people still depended too much on their parents to make decisions. In my opinion, however, I strongly believe that young people these days can better make decisions about their lives for the following two subsequent reasons.
First and foremost, in the past, a variety of information is not easily accessible because older people had to ask their parents for help and read books to get the resources they want to know. However, in modern society, we are able to search for a large amount of resources with one-mouse-click, which means that today’s young people can personally make decisions for them without parents’ advice. For example, when I was a high school student, I had to select my major. I wanted to be an artist, however, my parents were both businessmen. I searched for the information about art majors and decided to apply for the department of violin major. Although my parents did not give me any advice, I could decide what I want by myself through anonymous teachers of the Internet.
In addition, younger people tend to be unlikely to rely on their parents anymore since they wanted to build and manage their lives. Younger people in the current society are likely to decide their occupation on their own. As modern society has increasingly become individualized, today’s younger people desire to have own work life and lifestyle. For instance, a poll conducted by the Johns Hopkins University with 500 freshman students as respondents is a good example of this. An overwhelming 84 percent responded that they enjoy their life and decide to everything such as their work, major, and dream without parents’ interaction because they pursue own lifestyle. This survey proved that they are better able to make decisions about their own lives and have the responsibility in terms of the individual’s decisions.
In conclusion, it is possible for today young people to make decisions for them than those in the past because they can readily obtain a lot of information, and they tend to believe in themselves. In this regard, parents should respect their children’s decision and let them make decisions.
