In school, students require many subjects to learn. All subjects are important, but I thought art and music have a lower priority than others, even art and music can find easily in our life. Nevertheless, those are not essential in society, there are some reasons why art and music also needed to be taught in middle school students.
First, art and music also included in common sense. To be specific, there is a lot of common sense in the world. the concept of "plus" in mathematics just explains adding method and no one says that is not common sense. Likewise, the basic of art and music also contend in common sense. Getting a simple example, three components of light are red, blue and yellow, and many people know about mixing those colors then turn to white. A similar case in music, octave means eight steps of level system. The sound C plus one octave then that goes upper C. If someone does not know about those easy common sense, not knowing about those can make someone isolate from people, not even those field in society. In my private experience, my coworker did not go to middle school. So, he did not have almost of common sense. At one day, our team chance to visit an art museum with the guidance program. He cannot understand explains and hang around alone. After that, he does not participate with teamwork for his minority and finally, he declined.
Second, the destination of secondary school art and music class is understanding others' art and music. To be specific, when we heard music or saw art, we feel something and can discuss with others. People have their own standard in art and music, and no one can blame that. That is connected to personal interests such as genre like rock, jazz in music. This perspective is constructed in education especially in secondary school. Because upper education places do not let students waste their time to a minority subject. By the way, educations of art and music in secondary school make students find their personal interest in art and music. For example, in art class, students can see many cases of pieces. Sam likes landscapes, Laura likes pop arts and Jimmy likes illustrations. The art and music classes introduce art and music slightly, and students find their own answer in those classes. Moreover, students can discuss to other students with personal interests, not fought with right or not. In my cases, I like landscapes, especially draw with mist. So, I like antiqued landscapes. but one of my friends likes landscapes with buildings' light. He does not agree with me but he also likes landscapes. We usually discuss the technique of expression in landscapes which we learned in middle school. The important is, we never learned about art, over the ten years.
To sum up, art and music are not important in educations after secondary school. However, students need common sense and ability to understand art and music. There is no chance to learn those after secondary school, and if those neglected, students will face many problems with their defects related to art and music. Because art and music are concerned with our life deeply. |
