Some people think
it is a waste of time for high school students to learn a foreign language for
three years. However, in my opinion, it is a good idea that all high school
students have to take a three-year foreign language course. Let me introduce two
following reasons why I claim this.
To begin with, learning
a foreign language gives students capability of making relationships with
foreigners. It facilitates them for making a friend from other countries, which
is a useful social skill in the era of globalization. To give you an idea, here
is an example from my experience. I had taken Chinese course for three years
when I was a high school student. As a Chinese user, I work as an international
student assistant in my university. My job is interacting with foreign exchange
students and sometimes helping some of them in need. speak I never have
difficulty in communicating with them Chinese fluently. In this regard, studying
foreign language helps students build a network with foreign people, which is an
increasingly important thing in these days.
On top of that, if
a student wants to go to a university, it is essential to learn foreign
languages. To be specific, university students usually read and refer to papers,
researches, and articles from all over the world, most of which are written in foreign
languages. To comprehend and refer to them, students are required to have
language skills in some extent. Additionally, if a student wants to study
abroad, almost every country argues high-level language skills. For instance, TOEFL
score report is required by a lot of American colleges admissions. Also, learning
the country’s language is significant for students to understand lectures and
discuss topics with others. Not only in the campus, but also out of the campus
is it vital as a foreign student to speak the language, such as in a restaurant,
supermarket, and so on.
All things
considered, it is crucial for students to be capable of building a social
relationship and studying in other countries. Hence, I think that a three-year foreign
language class should be mandatory for high school students.
